During the annual Nacht van de Nacht (‘night of the night’) on 24 October, hundreds of companies, municipalities, churches and towers in the Netherlands switch off their lights to raise awareness for energy conservation and light pollution. There are countless activities in the dark to experience the beauty of the night, including in Dutch National Park.

You can join a guide at Oosterschelde National Park and search for creatures of the night around the dike  watchman's cottage in Wissenkerke. Or go for a night walk in the Neeltje Jans tune region, enjoying the smell of the salty water while listening to the sounds of the night. If you are lucky, the sky is clear and you can see the stars over the Oosterschelde. Did you know you can also go painting in the dark? During Nacht van de Nacht, Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park offers a workshop painting in the dark. Don’t think too much, just let the night guide you.

There are also a lot of activities in the darkest place in the Netherlands, the Waddenzee UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience true darkness with a wagon ride at Night on Terschelling or take to the Waddenzee and join a sailing and running aground tour by night from Harlingen. This special tour starts on Saturday night and ends on Sunday morning. There is also a shorter Nacht van de Nacht boat tour on Dark Sky Park Lauwersmeer. An authentic fishing boat  will transport you into the past by night.

Whatever activity you choose, it will be a night you’ll never forget!
