Whale training on the Nieuwe Maen

How can you recognize a cetacean? What species are there? Where can you find them?

Do you love nature, and would you like to know more about cetaceans? Join the Rugvin Foundation for a two-day whale training on the Oosterschelde. On board the sailing ship Nieuwe Maen, experienced whale researchers will tell you everything there is to know about whales, dolphins and porpoises. And you will be searching for porpoises.

It is all about whale ecology these two days. You’ll hear the theory on board the sailing ship, with a practical part on the Oosterschelde and fully catered vegetarian food and beverages. Among other things, you’ll learn about the role of whale in the marine ecosystem, how, where and when you can see them, how to recognize them, and how to take the best photos. You will go out on the Oosterschelde twice to apply what you have learned, once on the ship the Zeevarken (‘sea pig’, one of the porpoise’s nicknames), and once on the Nieuwe Maen where you will spend the night.

If you want to stay longer, you can always book an additional night aboard the Nieuwe Maen, but there are plenty of great accommodations in and around the monumental historic city of Zierikzee. Want to check out the entire program or register? Visit the page of Stichting Rugvin to get in the mood!
