Biesbosch Hiking Tour
Want to discover the beautiful and unpredictable nature of the Biesbosch at your own page? This five-day hiking tour takes you exactly to where you need to be, so you won’t miss anything in this national park and the surrounding area. A special app guides you on an exploration of lush willow woods and fields full of colorful flowers, as well as the historic harbor of Dordrecht. Keep your binoculars ready because you might even spot a kingfisher, beaver, or imposing osprey or white-tailed eagle.
All inclusive with nature and culture
For five days, you will walk from hotel to hotel since all accommodations have already been booked for you, from converted fortress to safari tent. The package also includes four breakfasts, four packed lunches and dinner on day four. That leaves you to focus entirely on the landscape around you and enjoy nature and culture.
Through the Biesbosch
You will walk 15 to 20 km per day. You will start by passing through the beautiful, fortified town of Gorinchem towards the Merwede river. A ferry takes you across the water to the Liniepad, which you will follow towards the Biesbosch. It is an amazing route past fortified towns, floodplains, windmills, forests and vast agricultural fields. After a big breakfast the next morning, you will cross into the Brabantse Biesbosch. You will discover farms on hillocks and encounter cattle and waterfowl along the way. You can take your time exploring on day three, when you will have the day to yourself – for instance by exchanging your hiking boots for a bicycle or boat.
Striking out through the Biesbosch on your own
From April through October, you can rent an electric boat, rowboat, canoe, kayak, or SUP board at Biesboschcentrum Dordrecht, allowing you to explore the Biesbosch on your own. You can determine your itinerary in advance, but the center will give you a boating map for the entire area, which also shows the best spots for an idyllic picnic or walk.
Kop van het Land
Day four sees you back in your hiking boots, with the ferry conveying you to Kop van het Land. From here, you will hike through the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch on a stunning natural path along reed fields and osier beds. This day ends in Dordrecht. On the last day, you will walk through the water-rich natural landscape of the Hollandse Biesbosch and pass by the Biesbosch Bezoekerscentrum (visitor center), which we recommend visiting. The path along the Wantij river leads through the historic harbor of Dordrecht and to the railway station, where your hiking tour of the Biesbosch comes to an end.
At this museum, you will experience how mankind has been dealing with the challenges and opportunities of the water for centuries now. There is a permanent and changing collection of art, as well as an outdoor museum called de Pannekoek, where nature and culture meet.
