Impossible to ignore UNESCO World Heritage: Kinderdijk

You will not find a group of windmills like Kinderdijk anywhere else in the world. It is the birthplace of Dutch water management, and an official UNESCO World Heritage site. One of those marvels that you simply have to see for yourself. The 19 original windmills tell the powerful story of the way in which the Dutch have been dealing with water for over 1,000 years. Here you experience the foundation of our iconic approach to water management. With the added bonus of splendid views in which you can blissfully drift off.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit is during the off season; July and August are the peak tourist months.

More than just a wooden machine

The entire area surrounding Kinderdijk should be World Heritage, actually. The windmills form a massive water management system in conjunction with the pumping-engines, dikes, reservoirs, pumping-stations and buildings.

Welcome on board!

You can reach Kinderdijk by car, of course, but taking the Waterbus or Watertaxi really makes the trip complete. Board at one of the official departure locations at a scheduled departure time, or book a cruise. Read more:

Explore on your own

Working millers are happy to answer any questions you have about the operation and history of these machines. But you can go explore on your own, too. Without a map, or using an app as your guide if you like. Weather permitting, the classic Dutch landscape complete with meadows and dikes is a picture-perfect setting for a picnic.

New Visitor Center

In September 2019 The Kinderdijk UNESCO World Heritage Site opened its new Visitor Center. The complete metamorphosis of the entrance ensures that visitors can count on a welcome to match the title ‘World Heritage Site’.

There is a reception area where you can go for tickets or questions, a catering area with a terrace, and an iconic souvenir shop. The most notable aspect of the Visitor Center is the view from the roof, however. Visitors will enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the most unique windmill landscape in Holland.

The Visitor Center was designed by Dorus Meurs and Michael Daane Bolier for M& DB architecten.
