Braving winter’s cold on the Wadden

In January and February 2020, you can go on a tidal flat hike with Natuurmonumenten starting on the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog, which is a part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The Wadden Sea tidal flats are accessible in winter, too, provided you are dressed warmly in boots and a thick coat. If you do not have any boots, you can borrow some at Schiermonnikoog Visitors’ Center.

Winter Wadden

The hike starts at the marina on the island. During the tidal flat exploration, a guide will tell you how the countless animals survive the icy cold of winter in the Wadden Sea. You will learn which animals spend the winter months elsewhere and which animals stay put. You can register for the tour via the website, which also lists the dates, times and availability. Please note that the tidal flat hike will be cancelled in case of bad weather.
