Opera on the Wad
Opera spectacle in the surf of the Frisian Paesens-Moddergat.
An opera performance on location is quite special, but when the beach at the foot of the dike at Paesens-Moddergat in Friesland serves as a backdrop, you can be sure it will be a spectacle. This opera spectacle will be presented in September, telling the moving story of the fisherman Peter Grimes and the death of his ship’s boy while at sea. During the performance, the audience will get a sense of the oppressed feelings of living in a small fishing community and the effect of loss and treason on a person.
Peter Grimes is the imposing opera that Benjamin Britten wrote in 1945, with strong character parts, impressive choir sections, and beautiful, expressive orchestra music. With a cast of 12 Dutch top solo singers, a live orchestra of 60 professional musicians, and another 70 singers and extras, conductor Arnaud Oosterbaan and the English director Paul Carr bring Peter Grimes to the Wadden! The opportunity to witness such an opera spectacle in this beautiful Wadden area does not come along every day, so be sure not to miss this.
Tip: Take some extra time to complete your visit by going to Lauwersmeer National Park or go hiking on the mudflats.
